“The Mercy Lens”

A traveler named Alina was robbed on the road, her belongings stolen and her ankle twisted. Limping into a nearby inn, she was shocked to find her thief behind the counter he was the innkeeper’s desperate son, Kai.

Alina said nothing. She simply ate the meal offered and paid her bill with a silver coin. That night, Kai knocked on her door, trembling. “Why didn’t you tell? Why didn’t you hate me?”

Alina looked at him and said, “Because I’ve been where you are hungry, scared, and ashamed.”

Years passed. Alina returned to the village and found the inn thriving. Kai was running it, feeding orphans and sheltering the poor. On the counter sat a coin, hers. “This reminds me every day what mercy can build,” he said.

Message: To show mercy is to see people not just for what they’ve done, but for what they might become. Mercy rewrites stories.

Coaching Suggestion Exercise: “The Mercy Lens”

Theme: Seeing beyond the moment of harm to the possibility of healing.

Suggestion: “Mercy is not denial—it’s vision. It sees the hunger behind the theft, the shame behind the silence, the future behind the failure. Who in your life needs to be seen not for what they did, but for who they might become?”

Reflect on someone you’ve written off, and ask:

“What if mercy is the only thing that could rewrite their story?”

Embodied Exercise: “The Coin Ritual”

Title: The Mercy That Returns

Materials: A coin, a quiet space, and a journal.

Steps:

Hold the Coin: Let it represent someone who hurt you—or someone you’ve judged.

Speak Aloud:

Place the Coin Somewhere Visible: A shelf, desk, or altar. Let it become a symbol of mercy offered not erased, but transformed.

Return to It Weekly: Ask yourself, “What has mercy built in me this week?”

Journaling Prompt: “The Story Mercy Could Rewrite”

Prompt: “Think of a moment when you were wronged—or when you wronged someone.

What did you feel then?

What do you feel now?

What would mercy say to both versions of you?”

Then ask:

“If I offered mercy—not as erasure, but as invitation—what story might begin?”
